BMI For Adults

  • A BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is considered healthy weight.
  • A BMI of 25 to 29.9 is overweight.
  • A BMI of 30 or higher is classified as obese.
    • Obesity can be further classified:
      • Class 1: BMI of 30 to < 35
      • Class 2: BMI of 35 to < 40
      • Class 3: BMI of 40 or higher
  • For Asians, a BMI of 23 to 24.9 is considered overweight

Morbid obesity is a term used to describe a severe form of obesity that is characterized by having a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher OR a BMI above 35 with other medical conditions as a result of the obesity.

Obesity can eventually lead to other serious health complications such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea.

While BMI can be a useful tool, it has limitations. It does not take into account the person’s body composition or distribution of body fat. For example, someone who is a body builder has a high muscle mass may have a higher BMI, but they may not necessarily be obese or at risk for related health conditions.
