According to the U.S. Census Bureau 2016-2020 American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates, overall health insurance coverage rates have improved in Onondaga County from the rates reported in the 2013-2017.

In Onondaga County 95% of adults age 19 to 64 years and 99.8% of individuals age 65 and older have health insurance. In Syracuse, 93.3% of adults age 19 to 64 years have insurance. 

Typical Healthcare Experience

The Onondaga County Health Department conducted a Community Health Survey in 2022 asking residents about their experiences when seeking healthcare in the last five years. 

The five most common experiences were: 

  • Long wait times to get appointments
  • Difficulty getting to appointments due to office hours
  • Wait times in healthcare provider offices, affecting the ability to meet their other obligations
  • Feeling like their healthcare provider is not listening
  • Feeling like their healthcare provider is not spending enough time with them
